U.S. study shows combining two different AI embryo quality assessments can achieve improved IVF outcomes

AI Healthcare company Presagen, in collaboration with US Fertility and Ovation Fertility (USA) presented a study on Life Whisperer’s AI-based embryo assessment technology at the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE 2023), September 2023 in Adelaide, South Australia.

Life Whisperer uses Artificial Intelligence to non-invasively and instantly assess images of IVF patients’ embryos to evaluate their quality, in order to improve IVF outcomes. Life Whisperer uses two AI algorithms that assess embryo morphology. Life Whisperer Viability AI assesses embryo images to evaluate their likelihood of leading to a pregnancy, and Life Whisperer Genetics AI non-invasively assesses embryo genetic integrity (euploidy) to evaluate the likelihood of it being euploid.

Although correlated, the two AIs, viability and genetics, look at different aspects of embryo quality. The question is, can combining the two AIs into a single assessment achieve a similar or better clinical outcome, and ultimately make it easier for the embryologist to rank embryos using a simpler, single overall embryo quality assessment?

The study showed that combining the two AI assessments is generally as good as, if not better than, the individual AIs. This demonstrates that it is feasible to use a single AI assessment for selecting the best quality embryos according to two well-known attributes of embryo quality: genetic integrity and morphology. Calculating the combined AI score from the two separate AI assessments is simple, which will make it easier for embryologists to evaluate and rank embryos.
