U.S. study shows AI outperforms highly variable embryologist grading for predicting pregnancy from embryo images

AI Healthcare company Presagen, in collaboration with US Fertility and Ovation Fertility (USA) presented a study on Life Whisperer’s AI-based embryo assessment technology at the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE 2023), September 2023 in Adelaide, South Australia.

Life Whisperer uses Artificial Intelligence to non-invasively and instantly assess images of IVF patients’ embryos to evaluate their quality, with the aim of improving pregnancy outcomes. The study showed that Life Whisperer AI’s predictive ability outperformed 94% (220) of embryologists’ attempts for identifying whether embryos would eventually lead to a successful pregnancy outcome. The AI was able to correctly predict the likely pregnancy outcome for 14 out of 20 embryos. Only 6% (14) embryologists’ attempts achieved the same level of accuracy, and only one embryologist was able to beat the AI and achieve 15 correct predictions out of 20.

Importantly, the study showed that manual grading by embryologists was highly variable. Most embryologists’ accuracy ranged from 30% to 65%. The accuracy for the AI was 70%. Since the AI is a computer algorithm, it will always provide the exact same assessment for the exact same embryo image, thereby providing a more objective measure of embryo quality.

Subjectivity and variability with manual embryo grading can be a problem for large clinic networks that need to maintain a consistent and high quality of care for patients. The study demonstrated that AI has the potential to standardize embryo assessment, particularly for large clinic networks, and help “upskill” junior embryologists.
