Novel AI algorithm enables scalable and automated assessment of embryo medical images across multiple camera systems

AI Healthcare company Presagen, in collaboration with US-based IVF clinic group Ovation Fertility, presented its novel self-annotating AI algorithm at the prestigious European ESHRE Fertility Conference, July 2020. Presagen’s Life Whisperer product analyzes images of an IVF patient’s embryos to identify which embryo is likely to lead to a pregnancy.

The novel algorithm enables its Life Whisperer embryo assessment product to operate robustly on vastly different camera systems, including standard microscope cameras and time-lapse imaging systems. The innovation allows Life Whisperer’s web-based AI to be reliably and scalably used in any clinic around the world using existing camera systems, without the need for additional expensive hardware. 

Unlike current embryo assessment algorithms, Life Whisperer does not require embryologists to perform time-consuming manual annotations on embryos images to operate. Life Whisperer’s AI is completely automated. Embryologists only need to drag-and-drop images of embryos onto the web application, and the AI automatically annotates the image and returns an assessment of the embryo’s viability to support the embryologist’s decision. The popular Life Whisperer Patient Report is then automatically created for patients, enabling greater transparency and evidence-base around embryo quality assessment and selection.
