International study shows two AI’s are better than one when assessing embryo quality

AI Healthcare company Presagen, in collaboration with US Fertility and Ovation Fertility (USA) and IVI-RMA (EU), presented a study showing that combining two of Life Whisperer’s AIs trained to assess different aspects of embryos quality can achieve better performance, and hence IVF outcomes, than either one AI individually.

The study was presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) 2023 in New Orleans by Dr Matthew “Tex” VerMilyea from US Fertility and Ovation Fertility.

Life Whisperer uses Artificial Intelligence to non-invasively and instantly assess images of IVF patients’ embryos to evaluate their quality, in order to improve IVF outcomes. Life Whisperer uses two AI algorithms that assess embryo morphology. Life Whisperer Viability AI assesses embryo images to evaluate how likely they are to lead to a pregnancy, and Life Whisperer Genetics AI non-invasively assesses embryo images to evaluate how likely they are to be of high genetic integrity (euploid).

In a previous study it was shown that simply averaging the two AIs could improve overall AI performance. In this study, the combination of the two AIs was optimized to achieve even greater performance in assessing overall embryo quality, both from a morphological and genetic integrity perspective.

Results showed that the new AI assessment strongly correlates with embryos that are both euploid (genetically normal) and have a high morphological grade as assessed by embryologists. This allows the AI to assist embryologists identify embryos of good overall quality. Good quality embryos are known to lead to better pregnancy and live birth outcomes for patients.

The study also looked at ranking using the combined AI assessment. Results showed a further improvement in both reducing time to pregnancy (compared to current manual assessment) and probability of selecting a euploid embryo in a patient cohort, when compared with using either AI alone.

These results demonstrate that the combined AI is an effective way to non-invasively and instantly rank and prioritize good quality embryos for further testing or for transfer. Calculating the combined AI score from the two separate AI assessments is simple, which will make it easier for embryologists to evaluate and rank embryos.
