International study shows AI can automate embryo classification to support standardization and reporting for IVF clinics

AI Healthcare company Presagen, in collaboration with US Fertility and Ovation Fertility (USA) and IVI-RMA (EU), presented a study showing that Life Whisperer’s new combined AI assessment of embryo quality can be used to help automate embryo classification, for the SART system used in the United States and in the ASEBIR system observed in Europe. This AI automated embryo classification can help improve standardization and reporting for IVF clinics, particularly large clinic networks.

The study was presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) 2023 in New Orleans by Dr Jonathan Hall from Presagen.

Life Whisperer uses Artificial Intelligence to non-invasively and instantly assess images of IVF patients’ embryos to evaluate their quality, in order to improve IVF outcomes. Life Whisperer uses two AI algorithms that assess embryo morphology. Life Whisperer Viability AI assesses embryo images to evaluate how likely they are to lead to a pregnancy, and Life Whisperer Genetics AI non-invasively assesses embryo images to evaluate how likely they are to be of high genetic integrity (euploid).

Presagen has recently combined both AIs into a single  optimized AI embryo assessment. The combined AI has shown to improve AI performance in assessing overall embryo quality, including reduced time to pregnancy compared to either AI alone.  Calculating the combined AI score from the two separate AI assessments is simple, and will make it easier for embryologists to rank and prioritize embryos for further testing or for transfer.

This study showed that different thresholds of the individual AI scores, and the combined AI score, can be used to automatically generate “Good”, “Fair” and “Poor” embryo morphology categories, which strongly correlate with embryo classification used in the United States (SART categories) and in Europe (ASEBIR categories). This allows the AI to support ongoing regulatory reporting requirements for clinics around the world, as well as supporting standardization and consistency of grading, improving lab efficiency, and assisting junior embryologists.
