Independent study shows improved time to pregnancy for IVF patients using augmented intelligence: combining AI and manual embryo grading

An independent study has shown that combining Life Whisperer’s artificial intelligence with manual grading of embryos can reduce time to pregnancy for IVF patients. The study was conducted by Flinders Fertility, associated with Flinders University in South Australia, and presented by Dr Ashleigh Storr at the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE 2023), September 2023 in Adelaide, South Australia.

Life Whisperer,  a product by AI healthcare company Presagen, uses Artificial Intelligence to non-invasively and instantly assess images of IVF patients’ embryos to evaluate their quality, in order to improve IVF outcomes. Numerous studies have shown that AI alone can achieve better performance and consistency compared to embryologists’ manual grading. However, the study objective was to assess whether the human and computer working side by side, a concept known as augmented intelligence, can achieve better performance than AI alone.

Results of the study show that indeed, combining manual embryo grading by embryologists with the AI assessment of the embryo using images, was able to achieve better performance than AI alone. With augmented intelligence, time to pregnancy for IVF patients was further reduced compared to that of using AI alone. The analysis supports the use of augmented intelligence in IVF clinics, showing that AI with manual grading work synergistically to further improve ranking performance when selecting embryos.
