Award-winning independent study shows Life Whisperer AI on a single static embryo image has comparable predictability to time-lapse’s AI that uses 7900 images
An independent study has shown that using only one of two of Life Whisperer’s AI embryo assessments on a single embryo image, has a similar clinical pregnancy predictivity compared to a time-lapse AI assessment that operates on sequences of 7900 images.
The study was performed by Takahashi Women’s Clinic in Japan and was recently presented at the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE 2023), September 2023 in Adelaide, South Australia. The study won the best poster award at the conference.
Life Whisperer, a product by AI healthcare company Presagen, uses Artificial Intelligence to non-invasively and instantly assess single static images of IVF patients’ embryos to evaluate their quality, in order to improve IVF outcomes. Life Whisperer uses two AI algorithms that assess embryo morphology. Life Whisperer Viability AI assesses embryo images to evaluate how likely they are to lead to a pregnancy, and Life Whisperer Genetics AI non-invasively assesses embryo images to evaluate how likely they are to be of high genetic integrity (euploid). Recent studies have shown that combining both embryo quality assessments results in better performance in time to pregnancy compared to either AI alone.
The study by Takahashi Women’s Clinic used only a single AI, Life Whisperer Viability. The study showed that using Life Whisperer AI on a single image immediately prior to transfer (or freezing), had similar predictivity to time-lapse AI that utilizes over 7900 images taken over 120 hours of the embryo development.
Results of the study is consistent with a previous study that showed Life Whisperer’s predictivity increased when using single images taken closer to the time of transfer, to conclude that the past is not always a good predictor of the future. The authors of the study speculated that this phenomenon was due to the AI’s estimate of the likelihood of a clinical pregnancy is changing over time during its development. This is what is called a point-in-time assessment. The quality and developmental stage of the embryo right before transfer to the patient was most important predictor of a successful pregnancy outcome. Even though time-lapse provides more data for the AI to analyze, with the assumption that more data means better performance, the additional data are predominantly historical images of the embryo, which may have less relevance for assessing embryo morphology at the point of transfer.
