AI Reduces Time-to-Pregnancy for IVF Patients, reducing patient cost whilst increasing revenue for IVF clinics
AI Healthcare company Presagen, in collaboration with US-based IVF clinic group Ovation Fertility has shown that artificial Intelligence (AI) can help IVF patients get pregnant sooner, in a study presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) 2020 Scientific Congress, October 2020.
Presagen’s Life Whisperer product uses AI to analyze a patient’s embryos using static medical images to assess their viability and thus chance of leading to a pregnancy. The study applied Life Whisperer’s AI to 1,000 randomizations of cohorts of embryos with known pregnancy outcomes and ranked the embryos in order of their likelihood of leading to a pregnancy for the IVF patient. The results showed that the AI can reduce the number of IVF cycles, or “time-to-pregnancy” for patients on average by 14%.
In addition to the wonderful outcome of having children, reduced time-to-pregnancy can reduce the cost to the patient by $1,200 on average.
Interestingly, reduced time-to-pregnancy can also increase revenue for IVF clinics by $4,600 per patient on average. When patients seek IVF treatment, they typically pay more for their first cycle compared with follow-on cycles after unsuccessful attempts. Hence, reducing time-to-pregnancy allows clinics to service a greater number of high value patients. With the demand for IVF treatment outstripping supply, and a highly competitive market for clinics, the use of AI to improve pregnancy outcomes is a strong value proposition for clinics.
Based on the study results and global IVF market size and treatment cost, the use of AI can potentially achieve a total global saving of $3 Billion for IVF patients, and a $13 Billion global increase in revenue for clinics.
